വട്ടത്തിലെളേമ്മ/Grandaunt Roundabouts (Malayalam Poem)

വിണ്ടു വരണ്ടു
ഒരു തുകല് ചിരി.
കുണുക്കിന് കൊമ്പത്ത്
രണ്ടൂഞ്ഞാലുകള്‍
ഇടിഞ്ഞു ഞാന്നു
രണ്ടു പഞ്ഞിക്കെട്ടുകള്‍.
ക്ടാവിന്റെ കയറും
കയിലിന്റെ കണയും
വാഴെലേം ചാരവും
അരമിട്ട കൈപ്പാടം.
ഇടിഞ്ഞമ്മന്തീടെ പുളി.
ചക്ക വരട്ടി വിയര്‍ത്ത ഉപ്പ്.
നീലം പടര്‍ന്ന കരിമ്പന ചട്ട.
മല്‍മല്‍ മുണ്ട് അടുക്കിട്ടത്.
എളേപ്പന് മാറ്റി വെച്ച
മുഴുത്ത മീന്‍ കഷണം.
ശബ്ദമില്ലാത്തൊരു വായ.
പൊക്കമില്ലാതൊരു വട്ടം.
പെറ്റു പെരുത്തൊരു വയറ്.
കണ്ചാറ്റ്ല് പൊള്ളിച്ച മുഖം.
ഓര്‍മയിലെന്നും നീയൊ-
രടുപ്പ് പാതകത്തിന്റെ ചൂട്.

Transliteration
vindu varandu
oru thukalchiri.
kunukkin kombathu
randoonjaalukal.
idinju njaannu
randu panjikkettukal.
kdaavinte kayarum
kayilinte kanayum
vazhelem charavum
aramitta kaippaadam.
idinjammandeede puli.
chakka varatti viyartha uppu.
neelam padarnna karimban chatta.
mal mal mundu adukkittathu.
eleyppanu maatti vecha
muzhutha meen kashanam.
shabdamillathoru vaaya.
pokkamillaathoru vattam.
pettu peruthoru vayaru.
kanchaattal pollicha mukham.
ormayil ennum neeyo-
raduppu pathakathinte choodu.

Translation
Dry, fissured,
a leather smile.
Two swings in
kunukku branches.
Swinging swaying,
two shapeless cotton sacks.
Two palms roughwith the calf's rope,
the wooden spoon,
the plantain leaf,
ash and coal.
The sourness of the chutney powder.
The salty sweat for chakka halwas.
The old chatta with robin blue patches.
Fan folded malmal mundu.
The biggest piece of fish,
reserved for elayappan.
A voiceless mouth.
A very short round.
A big breeding tummy.
A tear burnt face.
In memory dissections,
you, the warmth of a hearth.

Notes:
1, kunukku- the traditional ear ornament worn by christian women in kerala, some decades back. years of wearing the heavy ornament creates two swinging holes in the ear lobe eventually. every christian 'ammachi'(grand mother) has it.
2, chakka- jackfruit
3, chatta- the traditional syrian christian white blouse.
4, mal mal mundu- the dhothi which christian women wears with a peculiar fan fold at the rear.
5, elayappan- uncle, her husband.
